Updated: Sep 9, 2022

Communities versus audience

If you have been in the NFT space for a while, you have probably heard Web3 users including founders, influencers, crypto natives, and enthusiasts emphasize the importance of community. If you haven’t before, this article explains the value of communities and how to build a web3 community.

“Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together"

What exactly is a web3 community?

A community is a group of people who share similar interests or attitudes. This definition, better describes web2 communities. Consider a community of doctors, athletes, and other professionals as examples. The web3 community consists of all web3 users from around the world; you would agree that such a large number of people cannot possibly share the same interest. However, they may share one common interest in that they are all exploring the opportunities provided by blockchain technology. Building a Web3 Community The community is an important determinant of the success of web3 projects, including NFT projects. A community cannot be bought. Understanding the importance of a community can greatly assist web3 innovators in ensuring the long-term success of their project. Here are some things to consider as a founder or community manager building a web3 community:

  • Purpose: Web3 users will always prefer communities with like-minded individuals to other communities. If you are building a community, you must answer the following questions: Why do I need a community? What kind of people do I need in my community? How will my product benefit my community? Answering these questions will help you become more defined in terms of product, content, and team selection.

  • Hire a professional: If you are a founder who is new to community building or are unsure of what to do, hiring a community professional is the best step to take. A community professional could be a community leader or manager with a track record of success. When hiring, make sure you choose someone who understands your project’s plans and visions.

  • Learn from mistakes: This is probably the most important point. There are lessons from failed projects, rugpulls, existing and successful projects scattered in the space. Reach out to other founders, ask questions, build a support network, and be deliberate in your efforts to build an organic community. No one knows everything about web3 because it is constantly evolving. Buying Twitter followers and discord members are common mistakes made by founders.

  • Identity: Transparency, vision, and communication are critical in demonstrating to your community where the project is headed and why they should be on board. A large part of the success of any NFT project is determined by the leadership tone set from the start.

Building a web3 community conscious of your project or product could be all you need. A web3 community, on the other hand, is difficult to build. There are numerous projects vying for the attention of the same web3 users, so you must strive to be the ideal project. Community size is not a strength in web3, but community quality is. Here are some resources from other community builders that will assist you on your journey:
